When Edsel Ford wanted to bring a higher degree of exclusivity and elegance blended with an international air to Lincoln, he worked with stylist Eugene “Bob” Gregorie to produce a one-off concept convertible called Continental. Based on the Zephyr, it was readied in time for his spring vacation to Florida, where it made a smash impression on his younger, affluent circle of friends, most of whom gave him cash deposits to secure their own Continentals. Knowing the Continental was a smash hit, production began. Sadly, Edsel passed away in 1943, triggering a corporate restructuring at Ford Motor Company and its divisions.
Eugene Gregorie left the company in 1946, and Continental production resumed with an extensively restyled version of the prewar car, as designed by Raymond Loewy. That fashion sustained through the 1948 model year, the last year before the entirely new Lincoln lineup debuted, heavily based on Mercury automobiles, and eliminated Continental altogether. The final-year Continentals marked the last time an American automaker would build and sell a car with a V-12 engine, the cabriolet selling for around $2,800, roughly $57,000 today.
This 1948 Lincoln Continental Convertible is finished in black with a tan convertible top and rolls on black-painted wheels wrapped in wide whitewall Firestone tires and adorned with Lincoln-branded chrome wheel covers with gold script. The body is fitted with the rear fender stone guards, fender skirts, chrome front and rear bumpers with guards, twin sideview mirrors and a Continental kit. The red interior is fitted with bench seats, an AM radio, a clock and a heater and defroster. Under the lengthy hood, the 292 CI V-12 engine is paired with a 3-speed manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter.
