Beginning as a customized Zephyr for Edsel Ford, the Lincoln Continental was conceived by him and then executed by Ford's chief stylist, Bob Gregorie. The car was introduced in 1940 as a limited, well-appointed, handcrafted automobile for the prestige oriented customer. The ensuing years have seen the Continental become one of the most recognizable nameplates in automotive history. With its long hood to cover the V-12 engine and the abbreviated trunk with the spare tire mounted on the back, the Continental is instantly identified.

The early Lincoln Continental has been recognized by the Museum of Modern Art as one of eight automotive 'works of art' and by Time magazine as one of the top ten best-designed commercial products.
