Introduced in 1971, the Land Rover Series III represented the final and most refined evolution of the original Land Rover concept that had established itself as one of the most capable and versatile vehicles ever produced. The short-wheelbase 88-inch model proved particularly popular, combining rugged practicality with outstanding off-road performance and dependable mechanical simplicity. Retaining the iconic aluminium bodywork and robust ladder-frame chassis of its predecessors, the Series III became a familiar sight across farms, estates, military installations and remote regions throughout the world.
Powered by the proven 2,286cc four-cylinder engine, the Series III offered durability and ease of maintenance, qualities that continue to endear it to enthusiasts today. Its utilitarian design, commanding driving position and exceptional all-terrain capability have ensured its place among the most recognisable and collectible classic British 4x4s.
This 1980 example is understood to have covered approximately 57,000 miles from new and has been in the current ownership for the last three years, having previously been retained by its former keeper for an impressive 24 years. During current ownership, the vehicle has benefited from significant mechanical investment and sympathetic improvements. These include a new quick-release Moto-Lita steering wheel, Optimill security wheel boss and locking wheel nuts, new 7.50 x 16 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM3 tyres mounted on new OEM tubeless wheels finished in Land Rover colour code LRC007, together with new shock absorbers and leaf springs all round.
Further works include a refurbished transfer box, replacement alternator, thermostat and speedometer cable, new side steps, wipers and washer pump, while adjustable free-wheeling hubs have also been fitted.
