Introduced in 1989 to fill the void left by the Land Rover Range Rover as it moved steadily upmarket and thus up to more expensive price points, the Discovery offered customers a less expensive, equally capable family vehicle that was also a dominant off-road vehicle. The basic original style went through Series I and Series II, the Series III of 2004 bringing about an entirely new body and chassis, largely modernizing the vehicle. The original Discoverys of 1989-2004, however, were known for being reliable, robust vehicles capable of comfortably and safely transporting family around town, or continuing on where the pavement ends to find new places.
Well maintained examples have long had a reputation for achieving high miles with minimal worries and interest in the Discovery continues to be strong among enthusiasts around the world. This 2001 Discovery is of the Series II school and features the 4.0L V-8 engine with an automatic transmission, 4-wheel drive and a 2-speed transfer case. Finished in Epsom Green, the Discovery is in remarkably stock shape, without bully bars, nerf bars, auxiliary lighting or other aftermarket accessories that are so popular among so many owners—only the factory luggage rack and full-size rear-mounted spare tire to speak of.
The interior is fitted with beige leather, power-operated bucket seats, a center console, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a tilt steering column with a steering wheel wrapped with two-tone leather, AM/FM stereo system and much more. Rolling on Toyo H/T Open Country tires with the factory 5-spoke alloy wheels, all things considered, this Discovery Series II presents exquisitely well.
