Rally Championship, more prized and rare than an EVO 2 N° SE 037 project was entrusted to the engineer Sergio Limone, who gathers around him a team of engineers from Lancia and Abarth (acquired by the Fiat Group in 1971). The concept chosen was a two-wheel drive car and to overcome the lack of driveability (the championship was played out mainly on dirt, gravel and snow), Limone optimized the overall architecture of the car: a rear mid-engine, finally supercharged thanks to a volumetric compressor, and a low center of gravity (the car was 1.24 m high). For his part, Pininfarina succeeds magnificently in overlooking these technical constraints thanks to a design that is both fluid and aggressive, and that no aerodynamic extension. The result was and is still amazing.
The 037 was immediately registered in the world championship for the remaining rallies. It immediately proved to be competitive. When the 1983 season starts, Martini-Racing, the official team representing the brand in the world championship, has high hopes. They will be fulfilled. If the 1982 world championship had been a running-in year for the Group B, 1983 saw a fantastic duel between the Lancia
and Audi drivers. After twelve months of championship and ten events, Lancia defeats its German rival five wins to four. The Lancia 037 is crowned 1983 World Rally Champion. This is the last time in the Group B era that a two-wheel drive car wins the title.
This Lancia 037 chassis 133 is one of the fifty lightened and unpainted cars intended for competition and prepared by VOLTA, one of the most recognized specialists in the world of rallying at the time. For his part, Jean Paul Sivel, CEO of the French men’s underwear brand Eminence and a huge fan of competition, approached Volta to create the Eminence Rally Team with the official support of Abarth. Jean Louis Clarr, Andrea Zanussi and Bernard Darniche, European champion with the Startos in 77 and 78 will succeed one another at its wheel, which will hang a very beautiful 3rd place overall at the Tour de France Automobiles in 1983 at its wheel.
Before retiring, it will become for the 86 season the official car of Fiat Lancia Corse Switzerland (Filancor) with a victory during its penultimate rally, the Baden-Wurttemberg.
