Designed by the young stylist Ercole Spada, who had been hired by Zagato in March 1960, the Appia Sport's lightweight aluminium body made the most of the 1,100cc 60bhp engine, the result being a surprisingly fast car for its size. The short-wheelbase Appia Sport would be built until January 1963.
This rare example was delivered new in Turin, Italy in 1962 finished in the same Burgundy colour it has today. The car stayed in Italy until 1975 when it was exported to New York, USA to new owner Mr Nicholas J Godano. It is believed that the Appia was moved to dry storage in California shortly after arrival and remained there, unused, until 2010 when it was bought by the current Belgian owner. A passionate enthusiast, the owner commissioned HAS to carry out a full professional 'last nut and bolt' restoration, which commenced in 2011 and was only finished in 2014.
After the mammoth task of restoring this beautiful car had been completed, it was registered in 2014 by the current owner, who has enjoyed it to the fullest extent. Since completion the Appia has been entered in various concours d'élégance events, including Masterclass Antwerp where it received a 3rd prize in 2015 and in 2018 won the 'Best Restored Car' class.
Recent works include an overhaul of the Weber Carburettors carried out by VGS in Cologne, Germany in 2018 (invoice on file). Accompanying documentation includes the following:

The car also comes with an independant valuers condition report confirming it to be in General Condition 1, meaning that it is in excellent/concours condition and very hard to fault. A head-turner at any event, this Appia Sport Zagato is worthy of the closest inspection and is ready to participate in any suitable event.

- Excellent état après restauration complète Dessinée par le jeune styliste Ercole Spada, qui avait été embauché par Zagato en mars 1960, la légère carrosserie en aluminium de l'Appia Sport tirait le maximum du moteur 1 100 cm3 de 60 ch, le résultat étant une voiture extrêmement rapide pour sa taille. L'Appia Sport à châssis court allait être construite jusqu'en janvier 1963.
Ce rare exemplaire a été livré neuf à Turin, en Italie en 1962 dans la couleur Bordeaux qu'il arbore encore aujourd'hui. La voiture est restée en Italie jusqu'en 1975 lorsqu'elle a été exportée à New York, aux États-Unis, à son nouveau propriétaire M. Nicholas J. Godano. On pense que l'Appia a été remisée au sec en Californie peu après son arrivée et est restée là inutilisée jusqu'en 2010 lorsqu'elle fut achetée par son actuel propriétaire belge. Celui-ci, un passionné enthousiaste a commandé à HAS une restauration professionnelle « au dernier boulon » qui a commencé en 2011 et s'est achevée seulement en 2014.
Lorsque cette tâche gigantesque de restauration de cette magnifique voiture a été achevée, elle a été immatriculée en 2014 par le propriétaire qui en a profité au maximum. Depuis sa réfection, l'Appia a été engagée dans divers concours d'élégance, dont le Masterclass d'Anvers où elle a reçu le 3e prix en 2015 et celui de la classe « meilleure restauration » en 2018.
Les travaux récents comprennent la révision des carburateurs Weber par VGS à Cologne, en Allemagne en 2018 (facture au dossier). Les papiers accompagnant la voiture sont les suivants :
