  • Retains original V12 engine
  • Ferruccio Lamborghini's favorite model of the era
  • Offered from long-term ownership and finely preserved

Launched at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show and named after a region of Spain famous for its fighting bulls, this new 160mph (257km/h) 2+2 abandoned Lamborghini's traditional spaceframe chassis in favor of a platform-type unitary construction, based on the Espada's but with a shorter wheelbase. An unusual styling feature was the nose with its quadruple headlamps partially obscured by electrically raised covers. The Jarama was styled at Carrozzeria Bertone by Marcello Gandini, the man responsible for the Miura and Espada, but with bodies assembled by Marazzi.

An improved GTS version with a 365bhp V12 engine appeared in 1972 notable for its 5-bolt wheels, much improved ergonomics, and superior build quality. Later developments included a Torqueflite automatic transmission and power-assisted steering. The Jarama continued in production until 1976, by which time 327 cars had been built, 150 of them to the more powerful and refined GTS specification. Conceived for the 'Gentleman Driver,' the Jarama was one of Ferruccio's favorite cars – a ringing endorsement from the man whose name is emblazoned on the tail.

THE CAR OFFERED According to information supplied by the International Lamborghini Registry, this Jarama 400 GTS was completed in early 1976, and delivered to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for its first owner, Mr. Rubin Diamond. It is one of just 150 of the improved, refined 'S' models produced and is equipped for relaxed high-speed touring with an automatic gearbox mated to the 365bhp V12 engine with factory air conditioning. Registry information lists Mr. Diamond as the owner in 1980, however no subsequent ownership history is recorded.

Finished in red over a striking white leather interior, this Jarama is offered in exceptionally well-preserved condition, lending credibility to the potential that the 4,123 miles shown at the time of cataloguing is authentic, however no supporting documentation is currently available to verify that claim. It rides on its proper Campagnolo five-lug wheels, shod with period correct Michelin XWX radials. The body, while in good overall condition, does display some minor imperfections consistent with an unrestored car, including a spot of corrosion on the bonnet.

Since joining the consignor's extensive collection, this car has been on static display in a dry climate and will require recommissioning prior to enjoyment. Once returned to the road, it will undoubtedly make for a fabulous companion on weekend tours and high-speed rallies, where the Jarama GTS' unique blend of surprisingly refined comfort, storming performance, and bold Gandini styling will shine.

Please note, due to California emissions laws, this vehicle may only be sold to an out-of-state resident for use outside the state of California or to a licensed automotive dealer.
