The Countach LP400 S, launched by Lamborghini just four years after the production-ready Countach LP400 was unveiled at the 1974 Geneva Salon, improved upon what was already an incredible and ground-breaking automobile. It goes without saying that Lamborghini had a big act to follow with the Countach’s first update, but the LP400 S definitely did not disappoint. Lamborghini knew that the Countach was still very much in style and had to retain the car’s visual flair to retain its character, but it also had to address minor updates that both the company and its paying customers had become aware of in the car’s teething years.
Looking to retain the same panache that made the Countach such a memorable car, the LP400 S bore the instantly recognisable and highly aggressive Bertone styling, complete with its iconic scissor doors. The most notable change to the S was that the car was fitted with wider Pirelli tyres, which helped to put the car’s 375 horsepower to the ground. As a result, the wheel wells were slightly flared to house the increased footprint, and the suspension geometry was completely revised accordingly as well. These changes made the Countach appear even more aggressive, and many LP400 owners opted to have their cars updated to the later specifications. Performance remained incredible, and the car boasted a top speed of 179.8 mph.
With 237 examples produced, the Countach LP400 S is divisible into three distinct series. The Series III model shown here is recorded by the factory as having been completed on 23 July 1981 and delivered to the official Swiss dealer, Lamborghini S.A., on 31 July, finished in Rosso over Bianco. It is believed to have been exported to the US at some point, where it was restored and refinished in Giallo. It was subsequently returned to Europe and remains in very nice overall cosmetic condition, with a more recent black upholstery re trim with yellow piping to match the eye-catching finish.

La Countach LP 400 S, lancée quatre ans après la présentation de la Countach LP 400 de série au Salon de Genève 1974, bénéficiait d'améliorations par rapport à ce qui était déjà une voiture incroyablement osée et révolutionnaire. Il va sans dire que cette première mise à jour de la Countach constituait pour Lamborghini une opération qu'il ne fallait pas manquer, mais la LP 400 S n'a pas déçu. Lamborghini savait que la Countach était encore très en vogue et qu'il fallait donc conserver la forme de la voiture pour en préserver la personnalité, mais que certains défauts de jeunesse constatés par les utilisateurs et la marque devaient être corrigés.
Cherchant à préserver le panache qui faisait de la Countach une voiture si impressionnante, la LP 400 S affichait le dessin de Bertone, agressif et immédiatement reconnaissable, avec ses portes en élytre. Sur la S, les modifications les plus visibles concernaient la présence de pneus Pirelli plus larges, ce qui contribuait à mieux transmettre à la route les 375 ch du moteur. Pour les accueillir, les passages de roues comportaient une légère extension et la géométrie de suspension était complètement revue en conséquence.
Ces changements rendaient la Countach encore plus agressive et de nombreux possesseurs de LP 400 ont alors opté pour une modification de leur propre voiture à ces nouvelles spécifications. Les performances étaient toujours incroyablement élevées, avec une vitesse de pointe de 290 km/h.
Avec une production de 237 exemplaires, la Countach LP 400 S a connu à trois séries différentes. Le modèle de Série III que nous présentons ici est sorti d'usine, selon les archives de la marque, le 23 juillet 1981 et a été livré le 31 juillet au distributeur suisse officiel, Lamborghini S.A., de teinte "Rosso" avec sellerie "Bianco". Il est probable que cette voiture soit par la suite partie aux États-Unis où elle a été restaurée et peinte de teinte "Giallo". Elle est ensuite revenue en Europe et présente aujourd'hui un bel état esthétique, avec une sellerie noire plus récente affichant des passepoils jaunes assortis à la superbe carrosserie.
