  • The first four-seater Lamborghini model
  • The 44th of only 247 built
  • Built to European specification and delivered new to the UK
  • Matching numbers engine and chassis

The newcomer's 4.0-litre V12 engine had first appeared in 1965 on a handful of late 350 GTs, this interim model being known as the 400 GT. Lamborghini's own five-speed all-synchromesh manual transmission first made its appearance on these cars. The 400 GT's claimed maximum power was 320bhp, an output sufficient to make it a 150mph-plus (240km/h-plus) car. The 400 GT 2+2 retained the overall, and highly acclaimed, looks of the 350 GT while contriving to be slightly taller in the interests of increased rear-passenger headroom.

Bodies were now steel (the 350 GT's had been aluminium) and the 400 GT 2+2 had the twin headlights already adopted in place of the oval originals, largely to meet the USA's requirements. Despite its novice status as an automobile manufacturer, Lamborghini soon dispelled any lingering doubts about its ability to compete with the world's best Grand Tourers. In total 23 examples of the 400 GT and 224 of the 400 GT 2+2 were completed between 1966 and 1968, making it one of the rarest Lamborghini models ever built. The 44th 400 GT 2+2 built, chassis number '0658' was manufactured in 1966 to European specification and is one of the last built by Carrozzeria Touring before their bankruptcy.

The car left the Sant'Agata factory finished in silver with black leather interior and was first owned by a Mr Avedon in London, UK. From 19th to 29th October 1966 '0658' was displayed on the Lamborghini stand at the Earls Court Motor Show in London (there is a commemorative dashboard plaque recording that fact). Subsequently the Lamborghini passed through the hands of various collectors and was registered in Switzerland by a Mr Bernardi, who kept the car for 15 years before selling it to its current collector, it is believed circa 2012. The car had been seen at Villa d'Este in 2004. The car is offered with its history from renowned Lamborghini authority Olivier Nameche.
