Shortly after the Jaguar XK120 made its sensational show-stopping debut in 1948, road tests quickly proved that 120 really did stand for 120 MPH, making it the fastest production car in the world. That was due in no small part to the famed 3.4L 6-cylinder twin-overhead-cam XK engine, which went on to power the spaceframed competition XK120C, better known as the C-type, to famous victories at the Le Mans 24-Hour Race in 1951 and 1953.
Should one forget that or overlook its race breeding, the trunk badge of the XK140, which succeeded the XK120 in 1954, simply states “Winner – Le Mans 1951-3.” Though the profile of the XK140 closely resembled the earlier XK120, the numerous cosmetic identifiers concealed substantial re-engineering. Those on the surface included the chunkier bumpers, fewer and thicker vertical bars on the grille and central chrome trim strip running the length of the hood and trunk. But, among the most significant were: the new and much improved rack-and-pinion steering, which replaced the recirculating ball; larger-diameter torsion bars; and major revisions to the chassis.
Moving the engine, firewall and dash forward 3 inches greatly improved cabin space and comfort. Plus, the engine was now specified at 190 HP, 10 HP up on the Special Equipment (M in America) XK120, and 30 up on the standard XK120. Though heavier, the extra power made sure the XK140 preserved the legendary 120 MPH top speed. Part of a private collection since 1999 and the recipient of an older high-quality restoration, this 1955 factory left-hand drive XK140 roadster built in October 1954 is presented in black with a red-piped gray leather interior and red carpets. It’s powered by its original 3442cc DOHC inline-6 engine, which is backed by a 4-speed manual gearbox.
A popular driver’s choice is the wood-rimmed steering wheel, with the Pyrotect racing lap belts serving as a sensible fitment. While most XK140s ride on optional wire wheels, the 16-inch disc-style wheels on this example are enhanced with wide whitewall tires. The wheels also allow the option of fitting the rear fender skirts, which accompany the car, and add a touch of drama to the appearance. The XK140 both demonstrates how right the XK120 was straight out of the box and illustrates how it could be significantly refined into an even more capable car without compromising the sublime purity of form.
