Celebrating its commercial renaissance and renewed commitment to motorsports excellence during the latter 1980s, Jaguar unveiled the spectacular XJ220 prototype at the 1988 British Motor Show. Designed by Keith Helfet, it was relentlessly developed by Jaguar engineer Alastair Macqueen in conjunction with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) and remains an engineering tour de force even today. For its part, the XJ220 set a production-car record with a top speed of 212.3 MPH in 1991 during testing before going into production. The following year, it raised its own record to 217.1 MPH without catalytic converters installed.
Offered with the odometer reading 3,024 kilometers (1,879 miles), this 1993 Jaguar XJ220 is Car No. 237 of approximately 281 XJ220s produced in all and one of just seven left-hand drive examples produced in Monza Red over Sand livery. Further distinguishing it from the rest, it continues to benefit from a $40,000 restoration completed by Canepa in 2014. Stunning performance is delivered by the twin-turbocharged 3.5L JV6 V-6 engine rated at 542 HP and 475 lb-ft of torque. The potent engine was developed by Jaguar and TWR, based on the Austin Rover V64V used in the wild MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally car of the mid-1980s.
Technical details include aluminum block-and-head architecture, dual overhead camshafts on each bank with four valves per cylinder, competition-type dry-sump lubrication, multipoint fuel injection with dual injectors per cylinder, and Zytek electronic engine management. A 5-speed manual transaxle delivers the power in concert with a limited-slip differential. Stopping is delivered by AP Racing disc brakes with 4-piston calipers all around, and road contact is via staggered 17- and 18-inch Speedline wheels mounting high-performance radial tires. Based upon a bonded aluminum honeycomb chassis, the XJ220 rides on fully independent suspension with unequal-length front and rear control arms.
Lightweight and aero-efficient aluminum bodywork was pressed by Abbey Panels Ltd. of Coventry, England. In addition to such signature features as sleek retractable headlight covers and a glass roof panel, this XJ220 features the comfort of air conditioning and the additional entertainment supplied by an Alpine stereo with a trunk-mounted CD changer.
