The timeless beauty of the original Jaguar XKE has earned it a permanent place on display at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, a rare honor conferred upon just eight other automotive creations. Such rare status demands only the finest materials and painstaking craftsmanship in executing a proper restoration, such as that recently completed by famed Jaguar specialists Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California, on this arresting 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Fixed Head Coupe.
Work commenced with stripping the body to bare metal before refinishing it in period-correct Opalescent Golden Sand, complemented with a thoroughly restored tan leather interior incorporating restored seats and frames, rebuilt Smiths instruments, a restored wood-rimmed steering wheel and restored brightwork and trim. All mechanical systems and components were rebuilt, serviced, restored or replaced as needed. The engine block was hot tanked, line-bored and magnafluxed; new pistons, rings and bearings were installed, and the crank was machined.
The cylinder head was rebuilt with new valves, guides, seals and timing chain, the triple SU carburetors were rebuilt, and the fuel tank was hot tanked, epoxy sealed and painted. New fuel and water pumps, a new factory-style radiator, new clutch and machined flywheel are also featured along with a new stainless steel exhaust system. The driveshaft was balanced and new U-joints were installed; the starter, alternator and brake booster were rebuilt, and a new battery, wiring harness and shocks were installed. A 4-speed manual transmission and IRS complete the thoroughly freshened drivetrain.
Riding on five new Dayton chromed wire wheels fitted with Vredestein 185-15 tires, this splendid and superbly restored 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Fixed Head Coupe is offered with just 82 test miles since its completion.
