For many E-Type enthusiasts, the late covered-headlamp Series 1 models represent a sweet spot. On the one-hand there’s the sublime purity of form Enzo Ferrari so envied in the 1961 original before U.S. federal regulations compromised the looks. On the other there’s the improvements that made the E-Type even better before the emissions regulations chipped away at its shattering performance. When UK motoring mags road tested the show-stopping sensation of the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, they clocked 150.4 MPH in a fixed-head coupe and recorded 149.1 MPH in a roadster.
While road-test cars were tweaked a little and early owners found 145 MPH a more realistic maximum, the legend was born: a stunning, svelte sports car that wasn’t matched by anything within $4,000 of its price. In 1965, the famed 3.8L straight-6 XK engine that had powered C- and D-Type Le Mans winners grew to 4.2L. Though still rated at the same 265 HP, the 4.2 E-Type had better bottom end torque and midrange pick up. There was also a new full synchromesh gear box, electrics were now via alternator, and the seats were more comfortable. As a 1967 model, this left-hand drive roadster features the glorious full-house triple-SU carb setup.
It also retains the covered head lamps that contributed so much to its looks, as well as the neater, slimmer, styled auxiliary lamp clusters, both front and rear, that were soon to be replaced by larger, clumsier rectangular ones that no longer integrated into the curves. Another detail that many appreciate is the flight-deck style toggle switches on the instrument panel, which in the Series II were replaced with rocker switches.
In purposeful gray with a red leather interior and carpets and a black convertible top, this 1967 roadster still possesses the signature notes of the car Enzo Ferrari grudgingly conceded was simply “the most beautiful car in the world.” Not only that, the E-Type’s performance was on a par with its Italian rival, but delivered it all at a fraction of the price.
