Initially conceived as a successor to the immortal D-type, which had bagged a trio of wins at Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957, Jaguar opted instead to distill the D-type DNA into a race car for the road. With its wind-cheating shape and power provided by a 3.8L/265 HP version of the famed DOHC six, the E-type dispatched the 0-60 MPH dash in 7 seconds and recorded a top speed of 150 MPH in road tests. The legend was born: a stunning, svelte sports car that wasn’t matched by anything within $4,000 of its price.

Though the E-type’s shape and unit construction evolved from the D-type, the interior appointments and manners of the raw racer were refined for the road with fully independent suspension, and the all-around disc brakes were now in-board at the rear to reduce unsprung weight. The first major development came in 1964 when the engine was enlarged to 4.2L, and though this British Racing Green left-hand drive roadster with tan interior is a 1963 car, it features the larger engine. Though still rated at 265 HP, a key benefit of the 4.2L unit was an 18% improvement in torque to 283 lb-ft with peak power coming in at lower revs.

The result was better throttle response and fewer up and down shifts on the 4-speed manual transmission. In this example, it’s important to note it features the full-house triple-SU carb setup of the initial 4.2L cars, before U.S. federal regulations got hold of the E-type and imposed power-sapping twin carburetors. Later, the looks of the E-type were also compromised with protruding uncovered headlights, thicker bumpers and clumsier rear light clusters, but as a 1963 car, this Series 1 example retains the original purity of form Enzo Ferrari so envied. S1 purists will also note the toggle switches and the engine-turned aluminum central instrument panel and console between the bucket seats.

Period options include the pushbutton radio and the chromed wire wheels in place of standard painted wire wheels. It’s a detail that might be missed by many, but even the winged hub spinners later fell foul of U.S. safety rules. All in all, this 1963 Series 1 roadster embodies all the hallmarks of the original that Car and Driver lauded as “sensual and elemental,” but with the discrete engine upgrade that made the 1964 4.2L Series 1 more flexible and responsive on the open road.
