When Honda slaps an “R” on its vehicles, it generally means greatness ensues. Hence the R in the name, which stands for Racing. As only 1,000 Civic Type Rs will be built in 2021, 600 of which were destined for the United States, the R could well stand for rare as well.
The 2021 Honda Civic Type R has won the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere with its outlandish styling available only in Phoenix Yellow Pearl with black trim, a hyper-refined chassis, 6-speed manual transmission only platform, and a 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine that seems to rev more like a motorcycle than a car engine. The bottom line is a rare racing car that can be used daily, thanks to Honda reliability and the practicality of a five-door hatchback body. And make no mistake, it is a race car cunningly disguised as a commuter. It’ll rip from 0-60 MPH in just over 4 seconds, similar to the modern Ford Mustang GT, and top out in the 170 MPH neighborhood.
It pulls over 1 g on the skid pad and takes just 142-feet to stop from 70 MPH—the same distance required of a modern Acura NSX or Porsche 911S. With just 600 arriving in the U.S., the Civic Type R is an instant collectible, and this one, No. 126 of those 600, has only covered 47 miles from new. Fitted with the standard red and black interior, complete with a two-tone Alcantara steering wheel and Type R bucket seats with red and white stitching, the quick Honda also offers dual-zone climate control, power windows, power locks, power mirrors and an impressive AM/FM stereo system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and SiriusXM satellite radio.
The body is finished in the standard-issue Phoenix Yellow and equipped with a multitude of aerodynamic enhancements, most of which are finished in black and give the car its yellow-black motif, all the while allowing the red-caliper Brembo brakes to shine behind the lightweight, black BBS wheels.
