Ford’s Model 40 design was sharpened for 1934. The grille was straightened and given bolder bars, and there were new hub caps, smaller headlamps and cowl lamps, and a revised V-8 ornament. Mechanical changes comprised a new two-barrel Stromberg carburetor, replacing the previous single-throat Detroit Lubricator component, and a redesigned air cleaner, the sum of the modifications responsible for ten additional horsepower.
Originally a South Dakota car, this three-window ’34 was acquired in solid unrestored condition from a Texas owner. It was completely restored in the Alexander workshops, completed in 2011. As is expected of Nick Alexander cars, it earned a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V-8 Club at Auburn, Indiana on its first time out, judged at 995 points.
Finished in black, the car is nicely accented with Aurora Red wheels and pinstripe. An interior in correct, rose beige mohair complements an opening rear window and harmonizes with brown carpet on the floor. Dashboard and window moldings have expertly-refinished wood grain, and the instruments have been completely restored. The odometer shows fewer than 80 miles, the distance traveled since completion of the restoration.
The 1934 Three-Window V-8 Ford Coupe was available only in DeLuxe trim. With barely 26,000 built, it sold at about a third the volume of the five-window coupe, which could be had as either Standard or DeLuxe. It is unusual to find an unrestored example today, and rarer still to restore one to authentic original condition.
