Many enthusiasts still fondly look back at the 1990s as one of NASCAR’s most legendary eras, and in the entire history of the sport, few names carry more weight than Bud Moore Engineering. Moore’s history in the sport and association with Ford Motor Company is well recognized. From Riverside to the SCCA Boss 302 Trans-Am era and NASCAR, Moore’s drivers helped write the history of American motor racing, especially when turning corners was involved. All of this makes this 1993 Ford Thunderbird from the Comer Collection a very special race car.
Not only is it a Bud Moore Engineering-built NASCAR, it is also an original road-course-chassis car with the best sponsorship and some of the best drivers around on its resume. Plus, it is also a NASCAR road-course race winner—a very important distinction among its peers. In 1993, its debut season, this Bud Moore car was raced by Geoff Bodine as the bright red Ford-sponsored Motorcraft Quality Parts Ford Thunderbird, a win at the Sears Point Save Mart 300 being the highlight of that season. After the race at Richmond on September 11, 1993, Geoff departed to run his own team, and Bud hired Lake Speed as the team driver for the No. 15 car.
In 1994, Speed finished in 11th place in the championship, taking a fifth-place finish at Charlotte and a fourth at Atlanta, the top results that year. In 1995, Speed decided to go in a different direction, and Bud was quick to entice Dick Trickle to slide through the window of the Tri-Tone Blue Ford. When Ford subsequently transferred its sponsorship program from Moore to Robert Yates Racing late that year, this special road-course car, already prepped for the 1996 season, was offered for sale by Moore as a collector’s piece. A letter attesting to its authenticity personally signed by Bud Moore is included in the sale.
During its time on the NASCAR circuit, this No. 15 Ford became one of the most recognizable cars of the day and was featured in many ad campaigns, as well as in multiple scale models of it that are still available today. In its life after its professional career, this Thunderbird was campaigned by its previous owner for 13 years and was consistently a podium standout winner with a number of historic groups, including HMSA, HSCRS, SCRS, SCCA, HSR West, The Coronado Festival of Speed and at two of three San Jose Grand Prix races.
In January 2012, this well-sorted, reliable and classic NASCAR stock car was sold to Colin Comer, who has continued to enjoy it in vintage racing events for the past five years. Its current specification includes era-correct preparation with a fresh 358 CI Ford NASCAR engine built by noted master Tony Oddo at T.O.E Performance, as well as a proper 4-speed NASCAR dog-ring gearbox, full-race Ford 9-inch rear end with Detroit Locker, Brembo brakes and original-and-correct components with the signature Bud Moore Engineering quality throughout.
The car sits in race-ready condition, with its last full race prep having occurred in July 2017, after which the legendary Boris Said spent a day track testing this very car at Road America for an upcoming feature story in “Road & Track” magazine this fall. The sale of this No. 15 Motorcraft Quality Care Thunderbird includes its original fitted NASCAR car cover that is embroidered to match its livery, as well as a removable passenger’s seat to give anybody brave enough the ride of their life.
To find an original road-course-chassis NASCAR of this era from a well-known team is difficult enough, but to find a Bud Moore-built road-course-winning car like this that was also sponsored by Ford is nearly impossible. So, to find one coming from more than 18 years in the hands of two very capable and meticulous owners who have spared no expense in keeping it in such spectacular, race-ready shape certainly offers an opportunity to own and race a true part of NASCAR and road-racing history.
