In a season marked by typically hot competition on the nation’s paved ovals and superspeedways, Bill Elliot joined Junior Johnson’s Budweiser-sponsored team to drive this 1992 NASCAR Ford Thunderbird. Elliot took the car to 3 poles and 5 wins, 4 of which he piled up in the four consecutive weeks that constituted the month of March, at Rockingham, Richmond, Atlanta and Darlington respectively. Promoted by sponsors Ford and Budweiser as the “Birds of Prey”, Elliot and his Thunderbird remained at or near the top of the points chase until the final race of the season, the Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
No less than six drivers remained in contention for the Winston Cup Championship, but it finally came down to a battle between Elliot and Alan Kulwicki. Elliot scored a bittersweet victory in that final race, finishing second to Kulwicki in the Championship by a scant 10 points, the narrowest margin in the sport's history. A force to reckon with through the very last lap of that exciting 1992 Winston Cup season, the Bill Elliot-Junior Johnson Budweiser Thunderbird will always occupy a special place in NASCAR lore.
