When they were first put out of production in late 2011, interest in the original-style Ford Ranger spiked. Normally seen as a work mule, the Rangers have all too often been run for a few hundred thousand miles and then unceremoniously dumped for another. As such, only a fraction of those originally built remain in better than average condition, even those from the later generations like this 2004, which shows 3,438 miles on the odometer.
Fitted with the optional 4.0L V-6 and an automatic transmission, this Ranger XLT also sports 4-wheel drive, power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, tinted glass, cruise control and an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo system. Finished in Oxford White, the pickup is of the SuperCab variety, set with the Flareside bed, polished nerf bars, various bits of chrome trim and a hard bed cover. The interior is upholstered in gray and features front bucket seats, a center console, a column shift for the automatic transmission and a sliding rear window. The Ranger rolls on alloy wheels wrapped with white-letter Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires.
When Ford introduced the Ranger for 1983, the Ranger took the baton from the Courier compact pickup, which was produced by Mazda for North America from 1972 to 1982. The Ranger was Ford’s first attempt at designing, engineering and building a compact pickup truck. The chassis sustained through 2011 largely unchanged and underpinned a number of Ford of North America products such as the Aerostar minivan and Explorer. While Mazda continued to offer its own compact pickup trucks, in 1994, Ford began building them as rebadged Rangers.
In all, the Ranger was one of the most successful vehicles Ford ever produced and made a return to market for 2019 as a completely new vehicle as originally designed by Ford Australia. Now marketed as a midsize pickup, Ford relies on the new Maverick to fill the compact pickup segment.
