When it comes to racing icons, few cars can possibly come close to Ford’s heroic GT40. Based on Eric Broadley’s original Lola GT and relentlessly developed through four iterations—including the rare MkIII street model—the GT40 finally took Le Mans victories in 1966 and 1967 under direct Ford Motor Company involvement. By 1968, Ford entrusted the GT40 program to JW Automotive, managed by legendary former Aston Martin racing boss John Wyer. Under Wyer’s direction, the GT40 went out in grand fashion, scoring overall victory at Le Mans over an increasingly strong Porsche in 1968 with Lucien Bianchi and Pedro Rodriguez and with Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver co-driving in 1969.

One and the same GT40 won Le Mans both years: a Mark I car numbered P/1075, appropriately displayed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan today. Fast, comfortable and, above all, reliable, GT40 P/1075 had the right stuff to go the distance in 1968 and 1969; Ickx and Oliver battled with the Porsche 908 of Hans Herrmann and Gerard Larousse especially hard over the final three hours at Le Mans, finishing just 40 yards ahead of the second-place Porsche in one of the most thrilling finishes in race history.

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the stunning successes of GT40 P/1075, Gulf Oil, Safir GT40 and Superformance joined forces on the limited-edition 1969 Tribute GT40 featuring P1000 continuation prototype chassis numbers. Including all the aesthetic features of P/1075 at its 1969 Le Mans triumph, these cars included a Limited Edition Gulf GT40 guitar and a plaque naming 25 of the people who brought the Gulf racing team to its stunning success during that glorious 1969 racing season.

While some 50th Anniversary GT40 MkI cars were offered in standard configuration with A/C and a choice of left- or right-hand drive configuration, this special edition “Tool Room GT40P/1075” mechanically and visually replicates how these winning cars were as raced in the late 1960s, and it is even eligible for sanctioned historic racing homologation. Approximately 90% of the parts are interchangeable with the original GT40s, and this car was built to race in vintage FIA events with a lower compression ratio compensating for European fuel.

Carrying Serial No. 1169, this Tool Room GT40 P/1075 car was built to deliver a presence and experience as close as possible to the original GT40 P/1075 of 1968-69 Le Mans-winning fame, down to a veritable multitude of fine period racing components and features, even down to the FIA-compliant aluminum suitcase rack. Topping off the stunning GT40 package is a custom matching guitar autographed by former Gulf Racing Chief Engineer John Horsman.
