Especially built for the Ministry of Defence, it is understood that only approximately 8,000 Defender Wolf’s were made and a large number of those would have been hard tops and/or the 110 variety or lefthand drive. This righthand drive soft top or full tilt example is particularly rare. Sources suggest the upgrades to the standard defender put the Wolf price to the MoD at around £40,000 in 1997/8. Upgrades included a 2” ride height increase due to heavy duty suspension design whilst the chassis on this HD (Heavy Duty) is said to be eight times stronger than standard and fitted with a heavy duty roll cage, prop-shaft protection between chassis and hub and heavy duty bumpers.
The vehicle also features sealed headlights with breather pipes to top of windscreen, 113bhp, 300TDi engine with no electronics except fuel pump solenoid, rust proofed chassis from new, gearbox cooling system, reinforced front bulkhead, rails and sills, reinforced Salisbury rear axle and standard reinforced front axle and uprated diffs, 80 litre reinforced fuel tank, very tough and heavy duty Wolf wheels, convoy light system with a light illuminating the white painted rear differential, NATO towing hitch, 24v electrical system plus 24v generator and side mounted spare wheel to name but a few modifications.
A few Wolf Defenders have been de-commissioned by the forces and are now in civilian hands but are quite rare, especially ones that have not suffered damage and in excellent condition. Virtually all appear to have been very well maintained mechanically by the MoD as would be expected.
This particular example was sold by the MoD on 25th January 2013 and has had one owner since and is showing approximately 63,000 miles which the owner strongly believes is genuine. The condition from the forces was described as 'excellent' and a long established and highly respectable military Land Rover specialist described it as “the best one I have seen”.
The owner informs us the paintwork was original and excellent; there was no indication of any damage or corrosion and it was leak free. The condition was so good it was decided to make it even more special and unique. In 2013, the Wolf was stripped down inside and out leaving the body on and the engine and all running gear in place. The original exterior synthetic paint was professionally stripped to bare metal by hand, any small dents repaired and the bodywork resprayed with a modern gloss finish. All repainted parts (doors, bonnet, bumpers etc) were refitted using new, genuine parts, rubbers, seals, nuts, bolts, rivets and screws.
The interior is also in its original condition and was left this way to allow the Wolf’s patina to be appreciated but the front seats were replaced with leather items and a heavy duty, sound deadening floor cover was made especially to ease long distance driving along with a professionally installed Blaupunkt 24v Radio/CD/USB/SD with Bluetooth.
The engine has not been overlooked and boasts a double core intercooler, a VNT Turbo, blue silicone hoses and improved gear ratios to assist high speed motorway driving. Keeping the Wolf on the road are high performance Bilstein shock absorbers and steering damper. The Wolfs are perhaps one of the most sought after Defenders with this being a superb and unique example combining the ruggedness of a military Wolf with civilian creature comforts - a highly collectible and usable example of the now iconic Defender.
