Introduced in 1957 and offered for just three years, the Skyliner was perhaps the most desirable and fascinating model in the Fairlane 500 range. Replacing the previous Skyliner’s glass roof, with just the turn of a switch, the car’s retractable metal hardtop would slide into a compartment under the rear deck. It was a complex symphony of circuitry, relays, reversible motors, and some 610 feet of wiring, but it created an automotive spectacle none were likely to forget. Just 14,713 Skyliners would be produced for the 1958 model year.

According to the car’s data tag, this particular Fairlane 500 Skyliner was built on 17 July 1958 at Ford’s Mahwah, New Jersey, factory, where it was fitted with the 332-cu. in. V-8 with dual carburetors. Fitted with the Fordomatic two-speed transmission, the car was originally finished in two-tone Raven Black over Colonial White with a white vinyl interior with Red Royal Scot trim, just as it is presented today.

Fully restored by in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, about 15 years ago at a cost of nearly $150,000, this Skyliner still presents in exceptional condition throughout. After being shown for a few years following the restoration, it was sold to its current owner, also hailing from Lancaster.

A must-have for any Ford enthusiast or fan of 1950s automotive technology, the 1957–1959 Skyliner still remains just as desirable today when new. This exceptional 1958 example surely will not disappoint, especially when the top goes down.
