Given its iconic status from introduction at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Mustang’s total redesign for 2005 was one of the most significant automotive projects ever undertaken. Handling the task was Ford’s California Concept Center staff, influenced by noted Hot Rodder Larry Erickson. Clearly recalling the early design cues of the 1960s, the 2005 Mustang’s shape was predicted by the “Plausible Original Design” program at Mattel’s Hot Wheels group in the form of a 1967-68-styled piece called “Pony Up.” Ford’s Canadian-born industrial designer Sid Ramnarace is also mentioned as a major influence on the new pony car’s styling.
Two pre-production concept cars—a coupe and convertible—debuted at the 2003 North American Auto Show in Detroit. Predictably, Shelby lent its magic touch to the new-generation mustang, and this Shelby SR Concept Car was developed and utilized as a prototype for the 2009 SR model. Bearing Shelby No. 09SR0001C, also found on the gold Shelby CSM dash plate and silver CSM ID plate under the hood, this captivating Shelby prototype features a 4.6L V-8 engine equipped with a Kenne Bell supercharger system and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Finished in blue with SR graphics and badges, this prototype Shelby Mustang also features a gray and blue interior equipped with Shelby seats with headrest logos. Vital functions are monitored by a dash gauge pod including AutoMeter instruments. Other highlights include a functional Shelby deep-draw hood, roll bar and roll cage. Upgraded underpinnings include Eibach suspension with coilovers, functional front brake-cooling ducts and 6-piston Shelby/Baer performance brake calipers. Custom Shelby alloy wheels enhance curb appeal further.
Documentation is outstanding, including a copy of the title showing prior ownership by Shelby American Inc. in Las Vegas, a Shelby American Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of an email from Gary Patterson referencing the vehicle, a clear title with VIN registered as a 2006 model, and a window sticker.
