The short-lived Bronco II helped to fill a void in Ford’s lineup during the 1980s and the decade’s corresponding fuel crisis before it was replaced by the Ford Explorer at the dawn of the 1990s. While the Ford Bronco was originally intended to be a small off-road vehicle, it quickly grew to the status of a full-size sport utility vehicle aimed at taking on Chevrolet’s Blazer. However, this left Ford without a compact SUV option for its customers. In 1983, Ford released the Bronco II, an SUV derived from the Ford Ranger pickup and produced as a three-door wagon to round out Ford’s lineup and compete with the Jeep Cherokee and Chevrolet S10 Blazer.

The single-generation Bronco II was nearly a foot shorter than its competitor at Chevrolet, and all were 4-wheel drive vehicles up until 1986, when the rear-wheel drive layout became standard. Ford Bronco IIs produced in 1984-85 were equipped with Ford’s German-built, carbureted 2.8L Cologne V-6, good for 115 HP at 4,600 RPM, and came at a price tag of about $11,500, one that consumers took advantage of with the Bronco II outselling the Bronco nearly 2:1 in 1985—it seemed people simply preferred the smaller Bronco II. This rust-free, unrestored 1985 Ford Bronco II XLT from the Ben and Karen’s Collection spent most of its life in Arizona, ensuring that it has remained in excellent condition.

Beneath the hood is a carbureted 2.8L solid-lifter V-6 backed by an automatic transmission, with a recently rebuilt carburetor and a recently replaced fuel pump. With its rugged blue and silver body paint, the top-level XLT trim package not only takes those rugged good looks one step further, but also adds some luxury to the factory wood-grain interior, where color-keyed carpeting replaces the rubber floor mats and comforts such as air conditioning and power windows and locks are prevalent.

Rolling on alloy wheels with newer tires and benefiting from a recent tune-up that focused on caps, plugs, rotors and air and fuel filters, this 1985 Bronco II XLT is an excellent opportunity to learn why it was the top-seller that year.
