Finished in Boxwood Green, this 1976 Ford Bronco benefits from a frame-off restoration, which resulted in slight custom touches throughout. The 302 CI V-8 engine is dressed with a chrome air cleaner and finned, black crinkle-finish valve covers with Ford Bronco branding. Nestled into the engine compartment, the engine is paired with an automatic transmission. The interior features front bucket seats and a rear bench seat, all upholstered in white like the door panels. A wood-grain, three-spoke steering wheel adds a sporting zest, and the roll bar has been padded with matching white upholstery.
Equipped with a removable hardtop finished in Wimbledon White, the 4-wheel drive Bronco is set upon a 2.5-inch lift and 35-inch BF Goodrich KO2 white-letter tires wrapping KMC Bead Lock wheels. With the Bronco sitting up higher than average, AMP power steps have been installed to make ingress and egress a little easier. Power brakes provide a higher level of confidence, and the dual exhaust system expels spent gasses. During the early 1960s, Donald Frey worked with Paul Axelrad to conjure up a personal off-road vehicle. The idea was to give Ford a piece of that growing market and compete with the likes of the Jeep CJ, International Scout and others in the field.
Lee Iacocca, vice president of Ford at the time, agreed the company could use a vehicle like that but insisted development be done on a serious budget. Ford was spending exorbitant amounts of money on the Mustang project and was recouping the investment spent on the all-new Lincoln Continental. The Bronco would rely on many existing components but also require a number of unique pieces, though in the end it proved well worth the effort. Sales were strong and the original concept soldiered on through the 1977 model year, still selling nicely despite very healthy competition.
