Introduced in 1955, the Fiat 600 was one of Fiat’s most successful vehicles, providing much of the platform for subsequent vehicles including the 500, 850 and Multipla. It was Fiat’s first unibody, rear-engine car, and a sizeable amount of money was spent developing and researching prototypes to determine what the 600 would ultimately be. Meant to serve as an efficient, inexpensive mode of transportation, the car only measured 10 feet, 7 inches long, seated four and was propelled by a rear-mounted, water-cooled, inline 4-cylinder engine measuring either 633cc or 767cc and backed by a 4-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels.

Costing about 590,000 Lire, about $7,000 today, it served its purpose well. Thanks to the liquid-cooled engine design, the car was known for having a fantastically effective cabin heater. The chassis was fitted with 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, a single double-mounted leaf spring, gas-charged shocks and coilover shocks with semi-trailing arms at the rear lending a compliant ride and capable handling. By the time production ended in 1969, more than 2 million had been built, and yet production sustained in markets like Spain, Argentina and Brazil through the 1990s. This 1965 600 is presented in red with whitewall tires and chrome hubcaps over gray-painted wheels.

Fitted with the optional sliding roof, it’s also equipped with the front and rear bumper guards. The interior is upholstered in dark tan that resembles the color Sienna, giving a rich look with the red. A shelf under the dashboard hosts a period-correct radio and the essentials are given via simple gauges flanked by a white steering wheel. Equipped here with the larger 767cc engine, these cars are fun, peppy and fabulous runabout cars, perfect for zipping around town—infinitely easy to park and handle, Fiat 600s ooze personality and charm.
