To get the 131 Abarth homologated for Group 4 competition and to replace the aging 124 Abarth, Fiat produced a road-going version, sold in limited numbers that added to a few hundred only. Launched at the 1976 edition of the Geneva Motor Show, the 131 Abarth Rally got the same engine as the competition version, but a little 'civilized', with the four-cylinder 2.0-litre 16-valve engine developing 140bhp, making for a really quick car given that it weighed under a ton! Other changes from the regular saloon car included redesigned body parts in plastic, a modified suspension, special wheels and a sporty interior.
With its competition version that was stronger and lighter and with a max power of over 200bhp, the Fiat 131 Abarth won the World Rally Championship three times: in 1977, 1978 and 1980. These successes helped improve the image of the Italian carmaker markedly and not to forget the two victories of Darniche / Mahé at the Tour de Corse 1977 and 1978. The car we are presenting was recently tuned to Gr IV specification by a passionate driver, with a view to taking part in historic rally events. Every effort has been made to bring it into line with the original factory models, with the exception of the fuel system, which retains its carburettors in place of the Spica injection.
The dashboard and instruments were modelled on those of the factory models, the axle and gearbox were given the Abarth stamp in the foundry, and the superb unsponsored livery is that produced in 1980, when Alitalia left the rally scene. The car is accompanied by a file of invoices and a technical inspection certificate. An FIA form is pending. Historic rally drivers will certainly be interested in this splendid, powerful, and robust car - the ideal "mount" for racing victory. Please note that the car is sold without technical inspection.
