The Scuderia Ferrari fender shields, yellow calipers and silver-hued 20-inch wheels stand out vividly against the dark Blu Pozzi paint on this 2021 Ferrari Roma. Under the lengthy hood is a 3.9L/612 HP twin-turbocharged V-8 engine linked to an 8-speed F1-style automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the combination sufficient enough to spirit the Roma from zero to 60 MPH in about 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 199 MPH. But speed was not the point of the Roma. Ferrari’s goal was to emphasize effortless living and memorable motoring experiences rather than all-out performance.
As such, Ferrari spent a great deal of time honing the overall design and packages of convenience and comfort. This one features a Blu Sterling leather interior with black trim. Fitted with power bucket seats, the Roma is a technical tour de force with configurable instrumentation and readouts, a digital audio system, surround view, wireless smartphone chargers, dual-zone climate control, a folding rear seat backrest and much more for an exceptionally modern experience that emphasizes better living. LED linear headlamps light the road ahead, and the Roma rolls on 20-inch wheels with Michelin tires.
Upon its introduction, Ferrari’s chief design officer, Flavio Manzoni, described the all-new Ferrari Roma as “Formula 1 in an evening dress.” Ferrari coined the phrase in developing the new Roma as “La nuova dolce vita,” or “The new sweet life.” To Ferrari, the effort behind the Roma was as simple as it was complex: to remind motoring enthusiasts of, perhaps, a more elegant time in motoring history. Underscoring the effort was the edict that the Roma recapture the essence of midcentury Rome. When Italy was bursting with creativity and artistic flair, Ferrari largely led the charge in the Italian automotive industry, most especially with the 250-series GT cars.
If that sounded like a tall order, Ferrari demanded even more. The Roma was to forge a new direction for the company, and perhaps exert influence over the entire auto industry. Styled in-house at the Ferrari Styling Centre, the Roma absolutely exhibited restraint, enough that upon its debut, many were stunned. It had been a long time since Ferraris didn’t boast scoops, flaps, wings and flair all over the place. The Roma was clean and restrained, from the grille to the hood and trim; it exhibited a smooth, wind-shaped fluidity that was tempered with moments of sculpted drama. Ferrari recently unveiled the 2027 Amalfi to sustain the overall look and likely retire the Roma.
