Ever since Enzo Ferrari established the company bearing his name in 1947, Ferrari is equally revered for its engineering artistry and stunning victory record. With the debut of its amazing hybrid powertrain LaFerrari supercar in 2013, the company once again demonstrated its ability to directly translate its unmatched racing successes to the road in a beautifully engineered, cutting-edge technical package with purposeful luxury and functional beauty to match. But before the LaFerrari’s glorious debut came a series of prototypes, the very cars the expert craftsman at Ferrari fine-tuned from the chassis up to create an engineering marvel and work of automotive engineering art.

Among those prototypes was this 2011 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype. Internally assigned project code “F150,” LaFerrari’s intense design and development cycles included three distinct phases, with Ferrari engineers breaking through many technical barriers. This car, the first of the Ferrari Prototype Collection offerings, was internally known as the F150 Muletto M4 development “mule,” an early first phase, or “first family,” LaFerrari prototype. Based on the Tipo F142 platform, better known as the 458 Italia, its aluminum chassis was modified to fit a LaFerrari drivetrain, powered by a developmental Tipo F140FB first-generation V-12 engine.

The shock towers represent a breakthrough in their own right, designed using innovative barycenter geometric principles and demonstrating the feasibility of this new concept. M4 served as a development prototype from 2011 to 2012 for mechanical components and, in particular, for all emissions parameters, which was essential for eventual road homologation of the production LaFerrari. Special bodywork and Matte Black paint accommodated the LaFerrari technical package while confusing watchful spy photographers during the test cycle.

Interesting features include a custom front valance and air inlets, plus Scuderia Ferrari front-fender shields, white vinyl roundels and Pirelli graphics, with the interior equipped with black leather seats and carbon fiber dash trim. A thrilling offering, this early first-phase development prototype offers an incredibly rare glimpse into the art of automotive engineering that brought the LaFerrari—translated as “The Ferrari”—to the world. Featuring stunning acceleration from its 789 HP V-12 engine, the LaFerrari is the company’s first model with performance enhanced by an electric motor, serving up an additional 161 HP as required.

In addition to its staggering performance, LaFerrari also features aggressively beautiful styling with amazing built-in aerodynamic features maximizing its 950 HP total output. Two variants were sold, the coupe (with 500 produced 2013-2016), and the Aperta convertible (with 210 built 2016-2018), with hopeful buyers clamoring fiercely for build slots. However, the Ferrari prototypes carry an even greater rarity, with the engineering masters only offering a handful of the prototypes that led to the LaFerrari, and only its most loyal customers.

A unique and rare look at the engineering artistry of the mechanical components behind the LaFerrari, this 2011 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype is a rolling example of Ferrari’s “form follows function” ethos.
