Launched for 2004, Ferrari’s F430 heralded an array of functional aerodynamic breakthroughs by Pininfarina, including larger air intakes at the front and sides, a redesigned tail and rear air diffuser, plus new upswept headlamps. While visually subtle, these careful updates were the products of state-of-the-art computer aerodynamic simulations used by Ferrari’s F1 team. A classic case of racing improving road cars, these changes improved fuel efficiency of the F430 while reducing aerodynamic drag and lift. The DOHC 4308cc V-8 engine of the F430 was all new, compact and lightweight, developing 483 BHP and explosively propelling the car to over 193 MPH flat out.
An unqualified tour de force of design and engineering, the F430 incorporated all the important new technical features including the electronic differential (E-Diff) derived by the F1 team, plus the now-familiar steering wheel-mounted rotary switch, or “manettino” as the F1 drivers called it, allowing quick and easy changes among five possible options to the car’s setup. A Magneti Marelli F1 paddle-shift gearbox delivers lightning-quick gear changes. The F430 Spider was launched at Geneva in March 2005, but Ferrari’s loyal clientele soon demanded even more performance. Ferrari replied with the F430 Scuderia Spyder 16M, named in honor of Ferrari’s 16 Formula 1 Constructor’s titles.
Limited to a run of 499 cars, the 16M’s shrieking V-8 was uprated to 503 HP fed through a 6-speed F1 electro-hydraulic automatic transmission, a combination yielding blinding acceleration and a top speed of 196 MPH. One of 499 produced, this limited-edition 2009 F430 Scuderia Spyder 16M has driven just 5,857 miles. Finished in Metallic Black with the model’s signature Tricolore stripe and a red leather interior, this example features Scuderia shields and 16M Scuderia badging, plus carbon ceramic brakes with red calipers. The mirrors, side skirts, door panels, dash trim, engine compartment and seatbacks all feature strong yet lightweight carbon fiber.
Riding on Satin Gunmetal-finish 10-spoke wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, this stunning, low-mileage Ferrari masterpiece is finished off by “F1 Constructors World Champion 2008” and “16M Scuderia” commemorative dash plaques.
