If anyone doubted Ferrari President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo’s commitment to producing the world’s greatest road car in 1998, those misgivings must have slipped away when he revealed the new car’s name: Enzo. The great tradition of Ferrari supercars began with the 288 GTO, then the F40 and F50, the latter being the closest thing to a road-going Formula 1 Ferrari and the direct predecessor of the technologically amazing Enzo. Its styling was determined by aerodynamics first and aesthetics second, and it was closely derived from the contemporary World Champion F1 machine.
The chassis is made entirely of carbon-fiber and aluminum honeycomb components for minimal weight and maximum torsional strength. The Enzo’s all-aluminum V-12 engine is the second-largest-displacement V-12 in Ferrari history, after the 1968 Can Am unit. The block features Nikasil cylinder liners and a forged-steel crank spinning titanium connecting rods in 7-main-bearing journals. The heads incorporate the same highly efficient combustion-chamber design as the F1 engine: 4 valves per cylinder and intake, and exhaust ports also designed for maximum efficiency.
The F1 engine also contributed its active intake-optimization system that hydraulically controls injector trumpet length to produce maximum torque throughout the rev range. The Enzo’s electronic engine controls were similarly advanced, overseeing everything from fuel-injection metering to drive-by-wire throttle control, ignition timing and sensing knock. The result of all this wizardry is 660 HP at 7,800 RPM and 484 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 RPM, which when translated through the programmable 6-speed F1 paddle-shift gearbox comes out to 60 MPH in 3.3 seconds, an 11.1-second quarter-mile time and 218 MPH all in.
The Enzo’s remarkable computer-controlled all-independent adaptive suspension turns those straight-line numbers into mind-bending cornering capabilities with the help of Bridgestone Potenza tires on 19-inch center-lock alloy wheels and carbon-ceramic Brembo disc brakes. Taking command of all this magic is a simple matter of climbing into the carbon-fiber-trimmed cockpit, settling into the formed leather-covered seat and pressing the console-mounted start button. Driving the Ferrari Enzo is one of the most exclusive experiences in the world today, one of those dreams that only Ferrari can make come true.
