Ferrari had set a new record in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its cars claimed an astonishing six outright victories in a row in the most prestigious of all endurance races between 1960 and 1965. As is well known, though, Ford brought that hot streak to a halt with its GT40 the following year. But, in a show of strength, Maranello kick-started the 1967 sportscar season with a remarkable podium lockout in the 24 Hours of Daytona as the factory 330 P3/4 and 330 P4 led the North American Racing Team-entered 412P. The three cars crossing the line side-by-side was an unsubtle riposte to Ford’s photo finish at the Circuit de la Sarthe eight months earlier.
More than six decades later, Ferrari established its Icona limited series as a way to offer its closest clients the blend of modern drivetrains cloaked in retro-inspired bodywork. After paying tribute to its open-top sportscars of the late 1940s and 1950s with the Monza SP1 and SP2, the third creation drew inspiration from the mid-engined prototypes of the 1960s. The result was the breath-taking Daytona SP3, named after Ferrari’s feat at the American venue.
The most apparent design cues taken from motorsport past are the wrap-around windscreen, pronounced wheel arches, removable roof panel, prominent wing mirrors, and slatted rear bodywork that combine to create the SP3’s stunning, clean silhouette. Not employing active aerodynamics, engineers focused on passive systems such as the “chimneys” that extract low-pressure air from the underbody. This helped make the SP3 the most passively aerodynamically efficient Ferrari ever produced at the time of its launch.
The underpinnings are no less significant. The Daytona employs a derivation of the type-F140, 65-degree V-12 used in the 812 Superfast and LaFerrari halo hybrid hypercar. In this 6.5-litre form, the electric assistance was dropped to deliver a pure 829 horsepower. Sent to the rear wheels only via a faster-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the car launched from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.85 seconds.
The exquisitely specified example offered here, chassis number 299827, holds a September 2023 build date. Delivered to The Tailored For Speed Collection in December via official Ferrari dealership Niki Hasler AG of Basel, the car was collected by its commissioning owner in February 2024. While allocations for the exclusive Icona Series of cars were reserved for Maranello’s most prized customers, the vendor’s extra special relationship with the factory means this Daytona SP3 was blessed with a unique specification through the Tailor Made programme.
As a result, the exterior is beautifully finished in the custom shade of Rosso Deborah. The lower sections of the car—the pronounced front splitter, side sills, and sculptural rear diffuser—were specified in carbon fibre, as were the mirrors mounted over the front wheel arches, and lid lip. The “Targa”-style roof panel was also configured in carbon fibre. Further flourishes include the yellow callipers for the ventilated carbon-ceramic Brembo disc brakes that sit behind the diamond-polished forged wheels and the statement Scuderia shields airbrushed onto the doors.
Meanwhile, the interior is presented in Blu Elettrico Alcantara. The seats are then accented by the red four-point harnesses and the Cavallinos stitched into the headrests with Grigio Chiaro thread. Conveniences include integrated Apple CarPlay and a front-axle lift system.
On 27 January 2025, the Daytona SP3 returned to Garage Niki Hasler for a service. At this time, it was noted as showing 1,252 kilometres. Refreshed, the car soon embarked upon the Cavalcade Siviglia Ferrari driving tour in Andalusia in late-May. Accordingly, the odometer had risen to display 2,933 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. The Daytona SP3 is complemented by its “Serie Speciali Yellow Book” issued for limited-edition models. It is further accompanied by a fitted luggage set contained in protective drawstring bags plus owner’s guides in a leather Daytona SP3 folio.
The Daytona SP3 boasts a truly intoxicating recipe. Its svelte styling—which takes cues from the low-slung mid-engined sportscar prototypes of the 1960s—combines with the statement, naturally aspirated Ferrari V-12, one that does without hybrid assistance. As such, the latest instalment in the Icona Series is arguably the most coveted creation to emerge wearing the famous Prancing Horse badge in recent years.
This example, wearing a glorious bespoke configuration, would make for a prized possession as part of any collection anywhere in the world. Its appearance can be admired by onlookers at display events and its wonderful dynamics unlocked as part of further participation in driving tours.
