Although this 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti GT was styled by Ferrari’s go-to design partner Pininfarina, it was conceived as a tribute to the famed Sergio Scaglietti—the surname pronounced “skaall-yetti” in that musical-sounding Italian manner—a master of the art of forming aluminum who rendered his magic on such works as the pontoon-fendered Testa Rossa and the gorgeous 250 GTO. Introduced in 2004, the Scaglietti GT continued Ferrari’s long tradition of front-engine V-12 2-plus-2 grand tourers that began with the 1948 166 Inter Sport.
That’s a long and glorious lineage, one this Ferrari lives up to with its mixture of traditional style, passenger comfort and soaring power as only a Ferrari V-12 can deliver. In the Scaglietti, it is a 5.8L aluminum V-12 producing an ample 540 HP. Set far back in the chassis for almost perfect 45-55 front-rear weight distribution, the V-12 sends its power to a rear-mounted transaxle, in this case the excellent F1 gearbox. The second all-aluminum road Ferrari after the 360 Modena, the 612 Scaglietti’s smoothly sculpted exterior was inspired in no small part by the custom 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Italian film director Roberto Rossellini ordered for his wife, actress Ingrid Bergman.
The influence is most notable in the car’s scalloped sides, its defining lines flowing into the peaked front fenders and down through high-mounted headlights to underscore the trademark Ferrari egg-crate grille. This example’s attractive silver paint finish is complemented with its optional 19-inch two-piece modular wheels carrying Pirelli P-Zero red-label tires. This Scaglietti seats four adults in comfort thanks to its set-back cabin, here featuring deeply bolstered Daytona-style bucket seats finished in handcrafted blue Connolly leather accompanied by solid-aluminum accents.
Typically logical driver controls include a padded steering wheel, a central tach with linear auxiliary readouts, and elegant knurled switchgear. Driven 37,253 miles since new, this 2004 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti GT is an entirely worthy tribute to its storied namesake.
