From its introduction in 1976 to its 1984 finale, the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer was the most coveted road car on Earth, and almost without exception, the fastest. Its inception was preceded by the revolutionary 365 GT4/BB (for 365cc cylinder displacement, grand touring, 4-cam Berlinetta Boxer). Unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, the GT4/BB was the world’s first flat-12 powered road car and a masterpiece of Pininfarina design, establishing the blueprint for its 512 BB successor.
The 512 BB signaled a return to the Dino terminology combining total displacement with the number of cylinders and, while it appeared similar at first glance to its predecessor, the new car showcased important refinements that included a front spoiler, wider rear track and correspondingly wider body, NACA ducts in the lower flanks for oil coolers and a slightly longer tail with revised rear deck louvering and fewer tail lights.
Most importantly, the 512’s larger 4.9L Weber-carbureted flat-12 produced its peak output at 6,200 RPM rather than the 365’s 7,200, with torque increasing significantly from 302 lb-ft to 343, figures that translated into brisker acceleration and a top speed exceeding 180 MPH.
The 512 BB’s aspiring competition, the strikingly angular Lamborghini Countach, might have been the automotive poster child of the era, but the gracefully styled 512 BB was by any other metric the King of the Hill, dubbed by no less an authority than Road & Track magazine as “the best car we have ever tested.” A two-owner example, this beautiful 1978 Ferrari 512 BB shows all the fruits of a no-expense-spared restoration completed over a three-year period. The project included a rebuild of the original dry-sump 4.9L carbureted flat-12 engine, which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission actuated by Ferrari’s famous gated shifter.
Dressed in the rare combination of Argento Silver metallic paint with a Rosso leather bucket-seat interior, this fabulous flat-12 Prancing Horse is offered with the owner’s manual, jack and tool kit, and corresponding service records documenting its recent transmission maintenance. This is a landmark entry in Ferrari’s 12-cylinder lineage that will continue to gain in importance and prestige.
