Four years after the debut of the production Dodge Viper, a coupe version, the Viper GTS, was introduced. Inspired by the Pete Brock-designed Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe of the mid-1960s, it featured a V-10 engine reworked for more power and less weight, a redesigned competition-specific chassis and suspension, and more aerodynamic bodywork, with the distinctive “double bubble” roofline. Its ability to run a ¼-mile in 12.2 seconds at 119 mph and top out at over 180 mph were stunning for an American automobile in the mid-1990s, proof that the Viper was indeed the world-beating supercar that its fathers at Dodge intended it to be.
The Viper Red GTS offered here was originally delivered to Roanoke Motors of Roanoke, Illinois. Typical of the sales furor surrounding this model’s early years, its original owner had already purchased another GTS, and left this one as an investment on display at a dealership in Crawfordsville, Indiana, for several years, before moving it to indoor storage. Reportedly the car was not even actually titled until 2005! It was sold to a dealer in November 2020, and several months later acquired by the consignor, only its second private owner, in whose collection it has been lovingly kept since.
Today the Viper remains in utterly pristine original condition, as it should, having recorded only 64 actual miles at the time of cataloguing. Importantly, while it has been scarcely used since new, the Viper reportedly had its fluids flushed and replaced by an Indianapolis Dodge dealer in 2011, and it has been conscientiously maintained within the current collection. It is accompanied by its window sticker and manuals, as well as a clean CARFAX.
This is almost certainly one of the lowest-mileage and best-preserved examples of an important modern performance icon, worthy of the most selective MoPar collector or the supercar enthusiast seeking the very finest.
