That a major US manufacturer could come up with such an exciting concept car was startling enough but Chrysler's decision to put the Viper into production was nothing short of astonishing. Inspired, as its name suggests, by the legendary Cobra, Tom Gale's design study made its auto-show debut in 1989 following discussions between Chrysler boss Bob Lutz and Cobra-creator Carroll Shelby (in conjunction with Lee Iacocca, the man who brought the Ford Mustang to fruition), its appearance triggering an avalanche of deposit cheques. Without doubt, a large part of the Viper's 'back to basics' appeal stems from its unique selling point: a massively powerful 8-litre V10 all alloy engine.
The latter had been born out of the requirement for a larger unit to power the Dodge Ram pick-up truck, the prototype being created simply by grafting two extra cylinders on to the Ram's existing 5.9-litre V8. Despite being relatively 'low-tech', the Lamborghini-developed pushrod V10 churns out 400bhp and a brutal 460lbs/ft of torque at just 3,600rpm, figures which the 3,280lb Viper translates - via a six-speed manual gearbox - into a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 165mph. In the words of its current owner "I have driven many super cars, new and old, but this is one of the few that has truly frightened me".
As our friends over the Atlantic say......"If you're heading out in your Viper, DON'T forget you diaper!!" In addition to this visceral ride many Viper owners have warned that if your requirement is a vehicle to deliver you to your destination composed, calm and without incident, this car is not for you, perhaps try an Aston? If however, you prefer to arrive exhilarated, exhausted and smiling ear to ear, then the Viper is a must!
Compared with this paragon of power and lunacy, the Viper's running gear makes somewhat less interesting reading: a multi-tubular spaceframe chassis endowed with all-round independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes residing beneath the svelte glassfibre bodywork. That told, the 335/35/ZR17'S look simply gargantuan but barely allow this monster to put the power to the tarmac!
Finished in Viper Red with grey leather interior, this RT (Rapid Transit) example of the ultimate in open-top motoring was supplied new by Coppus Motors of Tiffin, Ohio, a franchised Dodge/Chrysler agent Est. 1927! Due to bereavement, the Viper remained largely unused and some 20 years later was part-exchanged with the supplying dealer having covered a mere 1,500 miles with its single owner. The car has a clean US title and has never been the subject of any damage or salvage, truly a Unicorn by any estimation!
In 2015 this Viper was exported to the UK where it has covered a little over 100 miles. Since its arrival the Viper has been stored in a heated and climate controlled garage; needless to say, every component of this 'as new' car is original. In a final addition, this unique vehicle is one of the "last 300 cars with Side Pipes" to be built prior to them being discontinued for the 1996 2nd Generation. To mark this it has a laser cut inscription on the passenger side bulkhead. The private plate 'E16 HTO' ('E16HT.O') may be available by separate negotiation. Simply an unmissable opportunity!
