With its muscular roadster body, raucous side-mounted exhaust pipes and powerful V10 engine mated to a 6-speed transmission lurking underhood, the Dodge Viper recalled the purity and purpose of the original Shelby Cobra of the 1960s. Most of all, the Viper’s excitement and wretched excess made the K-Car a distant memory and resurrected Chrysler’s proud high-performance heritage. Drawing from the 1985 Izod concept car, Viper development accelerated during a casual early-1988 meeting between Chrysler president Bob Lutz and design Chief Tom Gale.

They envisioned a simple, high-performance “image car,” an idea that was also supported by racing legend Carroll Shelby, who consulted for Chrysler at the time. The resulting Viper debuted at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and caused a sensation, drawing unsolicited order requests and deposits on the spot. With its massive 400 hp V10 engine, stunning performance and race-inspired handling, not to mention its menacing presence, the Viper legend was born, and its basic essence continues today under the guidance of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) Division.

This 1992 Dodge Viper RT/10 is the 61st of as few as 236 examples hand-assembled for the first model year. Accompanied by a clean CARFAX report, it has covered less than 4,000 actual miles (title reads exempt) with just three owners from new. Previously owned by a Major League Baseball player, the Viper joined the Scott Thomas Collection in 2015.
