In 1960, Dodge introduced a new model line that was crowned with a full-size series riding a luxurious 122-inch wheelbase. The highest trim level of this model was dubbed the Polara, a reference to the star Polaris, in an attempt to capitalize on the public’s growing obsession with the Space Race.
The Polara abounded in space-age styling cues that continued upon the “Forward Look” cars designed by Virgil Exner for 1957. Such features included stacked jet exhaust-style tail lamp bezels, shortened tail fins, and extensive chrome trim. The Polara was available in five different body styles and appointed with a deluxe interior compared to the base models. Though the Polara nameplate remained in use through 1973, enthusiasts generally agree that the moniker never graced a more sublime and stylistically unique automobile than the original 1960 first-generation variant.
Still displaying the benefits of an older restoration, this fetching Polara sedan is finished in Fawn Metallic paint with a white top over a two-tone interior. The Dodge is powered by a proper 361-cubic-inch V-8 engine mated to a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, which is actuated by a push-button selector on the dashboard console. Equipped with amenities such as power steering, brakes, and mirrors, this Polara is appointed for comfort with air conditioning, AM/FM radio, and a compass. Turbine-style wheels with center discs are shod with whitewall tires to complete the car’s authentic period appearance.
