If you hear Mopar people talking about sea monsters, it is most likely they are referring instead to the big C-body models of the 1960s and ‘70s. This platform was used between 1965 and 1978, with the 1968 Dodge hardtop offered here marketed under the name Polara. This is the full-size sporty version from this brand that model season, and the styling here is unique, being the final crisp-edge design before a more streamlined look appeared for 1969. The name Polara has been stated to be a reference to the Polaris star and could even have been considered an adjunct to Chrysler’s ongoing government missile projects in Huntsville, Alabama.
The car here came with the standard big-block, the B-series 383 CI V-8 wedge engine, with a large round air cleaner and showing the original equipment and finishes with maintenance replacements. Behind this is an A727 3-speed automatic transmission and 8.75-inch differential. The car uses torsion bar front suspension, rear springs, power steering and power brakes. The styling outside is pure 1960s, with its original rich green exterior paint highlighted by dark green vinyl on the roof, quad headlamps in individual housings, the horizontal ribbed grille and vertical ribbed cast rear panels, and trademark 1968 turbine-themed side marker lamps.
Inside, this car has a black split-bench front seat, factory air conditioning, a wide-design speedometer, a thumbwheel AM radio and a steering wheel with a half-circle chrome horn ring. Note the exterior cues show off the premium aspect of this release, with wide chrome bumpers, upper and lower body trim including wide rocker chrome, Polara and Dodge names in script lettering, and rear quarter panels that partially cover the back tires. There is a spare, jack and mat in the trunk, and the car’s final highlights are rubber bumperettes, full-size turbine-design wheel covers with Dodge trident centers and period-look whitewall tires by Hankook.
Coming in at 122 inches on the wheelbase, the 1968 Dodge Polara was indeed a member of the Mopar C-monster vehicles, recalling an era when a “big car” was indeed that. Catch this one as a keeper.
