Dick Landy enjoyed this 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 Wagon for only a year before he passed away at the age of 69, but what a fitting way for a drag-racing legend to sign off. The Magnum SRT-8 Wagon was among the quickest Dodges ever built, its 6.1L/425 HP Hemi V-8 and automatic transmission capable of pulling the grocery getter from 0-60 MPH in about 5 seconds and eclipsing the quarter-mile mark in about 13 seconds—not bad for a factory Hot Rod wagon, especially when it’s piloted by the guy who helped put Dodge and drag racing on the map.
Equipped with a cold-air intake system, AM/FM 6-CD stereo with Boston Acoustic Speakers, air conditioning, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry, power seats, power windows, power door locks, power heated folding sideview mirrors, three 12-volt DC outlets and much more, the Magnum SRT-8 left little for customers to choose from; it just came with everything.
Sporting 67,000 actual miles, the silver exterior complements the black interior while the SRT body kit, chrome-tipped exhaust and massive aluminum wheels give the impression that, indeed, this is not a typical wagon, it’s a wagon that can engage with the likes of AMG-stacked Mercedes-Benzes, M-spec BMWs and even some of Italy’s more spirited rides. And it’ll haul a family with luggage. Landy first tried his hand at drag racing when he was only 19 years old, taking a Ford pickup he borrowed and giving it a whirl. Studying mechanical engineering, he began building high-performance marine engines, but continued to visit the dragstrip.
Using his brother Mike’s 352-equipped Ford, his skills caught sponsorship attention, and soon attention from a Ford dealership in Van Nuys, California, and then factory support from Plymouth and, in 1964, Dodge. He competed in Stock, Super Stock, A/FX and Pro Stock racing, often using his mechanical engineering skills to better the cars he was racing, tricks that trickled back to the factory on occasion. Dodge always served him well—no wonder his last daily driver was this powerful Magnum SRT-8 Wagon.
