The window opened and closed quicker than most Chrysler fans would have liked. A blazing return to the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit by Dodge came as the new century started, and it created a swath of history that ended almost as abruptly as the marque closed out 2012 with a championship season to again leave its participation in stock-car racing behind. Through that tumultuous era, various upgrades to body designs and engine platforms evolved, but offered here is the car that started it all. This is the actual Dodge Intrepid hand-built by Petty Enterprises for a collaboration of NASCAR teams transitioning to Dodge.
It was created during the 1999/2000 off-season to do the opening development work for Chrysler on the return to the series the following season. Based on Hopkins chassis #RHE 11 99 721, this car was used to initially formulate what would be used on new circle-track vehicles. Since the factory was already involved in the Craftsman truck series, the engine selected for this prototype was a Maurice Petty & Associates-built CTS NASCAR V-8. The project was done covertly as Dodge did not want to create undue attention too early in its process, so upon completion this car was shown to NASCAR, who ruled it ineligible for competition and made suggested adjustments for any follow-up designs.
As a result, what is being offered was not windtunnel developed nor track-driven; it remains in museum-quality condition as a testament to this short-lived epoch in the sport. Finished in Dodge’s signature bright red with the as-built #43 car number and Dodge by Petty lettering, this is the heritage that still remains existent today. Coupled with the legacy of the most famous Petty family members, it also presents a very special opportunity to own a truly unique one-off race vehicle.
