When “one-hit-wonder” pop band The Troggs went to No. 1 with their song “Wild Thing,” it might have been referencing the Dodge Charger Daytona like the car offered here. Also a one-hit-wonder, the 1969 Daytona program was created solely to legalize a totally wild body design for NASCAR’s superspeedways. The factory needed to build 500 to prove it was a production car, and the result was a street cruiser from Detroit with a mile-high deck spoiler, a tapered, pointed nose, fender-mounted air extractors and a special flush backlight.
This beautiful car based around the upscale Charger R/T and recently restored by Dave Dudek is one of 503 Dodge Daytonas produced and has the lowest known serial number designated for production-line Daytonas. Under the hood is the date-code-correct 440 CI Dodge Magnum V-8 engine with its Carter 4-barrel carburetor. As one of 139 equipped with the 4-speed A833 heavy-duty manual transmission, it was ordered with the A34 Super Track Pak, getting the 4.10-ratio 9.75-inch Dana 60 rear axle, torque drive fan, dual-point distributor, 26-inch radiator and power front disc brakes. This car has power steering as well.
Originally sold in Kileen, Texas, on August 28, 1969, the Daytona presents in a stunning Bright Blue Metallic with a white rear wing. It is complemented with a blue vinyl bucket-seat interior with center console, the A01 light group, remote driver’s side mirror, Hurst shifter and performance dash layout. The outside features the special body components including hood pins, chrome exhaust tips and a flip-top locking fuel door. With the 18-inch nose cone leading the way, the Charger Daytona highlighted here looks ready to go with the 5-spoke road wheels and Goodyear redline Polyglas tires all around.
Today, the Charger Daytona remains one of the most recognizable cars of the muscle-car era and the “sock it to me” definition of “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” involvement. This gorgeous example is a “wild thing” that was made to move you.
