When it comes to the rarest of collectible Mopars, sometimes a car simply becoming available is an important event. Today, any well-done 1970 Coronet R/T tends to generate a good amount of interest, but once you add in a 426 Hemi and one-of-one optioning, it grows exponentially in both exclusivity and desire. What would make this design of such interest today? When turning back to the 1970 model year, there were a huge amount of possibilities for the performance-oriented buyer, and anybody who wanted a Detroit supercar could find a perfect match and price point. However, ominous signs were on the horizon, like the rising cost of insurance and overall economic challenges.

As a direct result, the pool of well-heeled buyers for a Coronet R/T grew smaller. Another facet is that the style of the 1970 model was only used for one year. The body had been smoothed out and the grille was separated into two parts, each surrounded by a ring of the front chrome bumper. Some loved it, others hated it, but it was instantly recognizable. It was soon after the first set of Hemi production numbers were made public that these cars began to quickly grow in collector appeal. The R/T convertibles immediately garnered the most interest, as only three 1970 R/T Hemi drop tops were constructed that year.

It is noted there were 2,319 Coronet R/T hardtops built in 1970 as well, most of them 440-powered (most meaning 2,305 cars). The other 14 of them were Hemi powered, nine being automatics and five being 4-speeds. Of those four manual versions, one went to Canada. That one was also the only example of this entire Hemi group created with a Super Track Pak driveline. It is the car being offered here. Coming off the assembly line very early in the model year—September 3, 1969—this FC7 Plum Crazy R/T would be the first Hemi 4-speed Coronet R/T built and the only example exported north.

Century Dodge of Winnipeg sold it later that year, and the car went through a typical muscle-car life before being rescued in the 1980s. Then, a long pursuit to refurbish this vehicle correctly began, as original parts of these cars were already difficult to find. Paint was done featuring correct undercarriage spray patterns and assembly line markings. NOS components abound here. These include left and right front bumpers, the right-side grille, front valance, driver’s-side fender, front and rear bumper guards, chrome tips, Hemi and R/T emblems, and fiberglass side scoops with trim, among others.

As a code-A34 Super Track Pak, this Coronet R/T features the A833 manual transmission and Dana 60 4.10:1 Sure Grip differential, and both units are original to this car. The 426 Hemi underneath the N96 Ramcharger functional hood scoops is an era-correct replacement with a late 1968 date code and built to OEM specifications. The interior was refitted using both this car’s original components and some replacement pieces. All R/Ts included very nice standard equipment.

In this case, it is the D6X9 Deluxe Black Vinyl Bucket seats with matched V1X Black Vinyl Roof, the C16 Center Console with the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, AM radio, sport steering wheel, wood-grain applique and functional round-face gauges. Outside, this car also got the M46 R/T-logo rear-quarter scoops, rear “bumble bee” stripe, deluxe bumper guards and hood pins. A rare Fresnel-type frost shield remains on the driver’s-side window. Rallye wheels and Goodyear Polyglas GT tires complete it.

Despite some difficult existence before its rescue, this car includes among its provenance the intact factory VIN and fender tags, matching VIN sequences on the radiator and trunk supports, and a partial broadcast sheet. It has been shown in several important venues during the past four years, including MCACN and Carlisle’s All-Chrysler Nationals, as well as on the cover of magazines in the United States and Canada. Well-recognized already in the hobby for its sheer rarity and featuring the benefits of High Impact paint, a console-mounted 4-speed, meticulous restoration preparation and no-longer-available NOS components, this indeed is a special opportunity for one determined future owner.

Do not miss it.
