After Carroll Shelby ended his collaborative relationship with the Ford Motor Company in 1970, he focused on his own wheel company until 1982, when then Chrysler President Lee Iacocca (who also previously had a longstanding relationship with Ford, rising through the ranks to company president up until 1978) convinced him to start working his magic on Dodge products. Shelby first turned his attention to the compact Dodge Charger, which was an upgraded version of Dodge’s front-wheel drive Omni.
From 1983-87, various versions of the Dodge Shelby Charger were produced that featured upgraded suspension, revised exterior trim and a 2.2L, turbocharged, inline 4-cylinder engine in various stages of tune. However, in 1987, when Chrysler decided to end the Omni-based Charger, Shelby purchased the last 1,000 examples, which he ultimately decided to modify in his Whittier, California, facility. These final Chargers were known as the Shelby Charger GLHS, with the GLHS standing for “Goes Like Hell S’More.” Their 2.2L engines received a non-EGR turbocharger with intercooler, as well as Shelby valve covers to give the GLHS 175 HP and an impressive 0-60 MPH time of 6.5 seconds.
Other features included a Shelby windshield visor decal, the omission of Dodge badging, a black and white speedo overlay, a unique Shelby dash plaque and Shelby Centurion II wheels. This 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS is No. 524 of the 1,000 built and comes from the Thompson Muscle Car Collection with just 59,179 miles showing on the odometer. Among its updates since it rolled off the line are the injectors replaced in 2008, the steering rack replaced in 2012, the air conditioning compressor replaced in 2013 and the battery in 2021.
Finished in black over a gray interior, this GLHS boasts a 5-speed manual transmission, power steering and brakes, a rear spoiler, bucket seats, a Chrysler AM/FM stereo and alloy Shelby Centurion II wheels.
