The Dodge Avenger IROC race car was a formidable piece of work to say the least. The Banjo Matthews-designed chassis stretches back to 1984, when Chevrolet Camaros were running the International Race of Champions series. For 1994, IROC race cars used Dodge Avenger bodies, switching from the Dodge Daytona. IROC drivers included legends such as Gordon Johncock, A.J. Foyt, Derek Bell, Al Unser Sr., Dale Earnhardt Sr., Bill Elliott, Jeff Gordon and a flurry of other well-known names, many of whom are emblazoned on the window of this Avenger.
This is a remarkably unique 1994 Dodge Avenger IROC cutaway display car showing half of the car in its Avenger racing body, while the other half reveals what’s beneath the skin. Rolling on Goodyear tires, the Avenger is complete with a Dodge 355 CI V-8 engine, Serial No. 020, a 4-speed manual transmission with Hurst shifter and a quick-change rear end. Sold on a bill of sale, the purchase will include a complete full body in white, a second dash and Super Speedway windows.
IROC began in 1973, when Mike Phelps, Roger Penske and Les Richter conjured up the notion to put 12 of the world’s greatest racing drivers in identically prepared cars to compete on road courses and NASCAR Super Tracks in a four-race series, “… going a long way towards [the] goal” of finding out whom the best driver in the world might be. The very first IROC season launched on October 27, 1973, with four events using Porsche Carrera RSRs and Mark Donohue emerging as the champion. The following year, Chevrolet stepped up to the line with Camaros, which would be the IROC car through 1990, when Chevrolet ended IROC involvement.
