The Chrysler Prowler remains a car that often defies description even today. Who would have thought, just 25 years ago, that a manufacturer would release a two-seat Street Rod as a production car? This example is even more exclusive, as it was part of a special one-time release known as the Mulholland Edition and shows an odometer reading of just 27 miles at the time of writing. The Prowler, which became a Chrysler model when the Plymouth brand was discontinued after 2000, came with a SOHC 24-valve 3.5L V-6 powerplant and a 4-speed automatic transaxle featuring a gated AutoStick shifter.
This driveline was selected to maintain a sense of streamlining to the car’s front end, and the car’s functionality was oriented toward daily use. Power rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel disc brakes and a unique front fender design that moved with the steering were all part of this as well. The Mulholland Edition was offered on convertibles under Customer Preferred Package 21A. This entailed exclusive Prowler Midnight Blue Pearl Coat exterior paint, hand-done light blue pinstriping by noted painter Dr. Ru, a dark blue convertible soft top and Agate-tone leather upholstery.
Interior features included leather-trimmed bucket seats, an Infinity sound system with a six-disc CD changer, air conditioning, cruise control, power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and keyless entry. There are white-face gauges including a 150-MPH speedometer, and a factory tachometer is mounted to the steering column. Outside, halogen headlamps cleared the way, and the car hosts a split front bumper with marker lights, running boards and dual chrome exhaust trumpets. In typical rodding fashion, the car has a notable rake, but that was factory authorized as the release features chrome 17- and 20-inch wheels and offset P225 front / P295 rear tires.
Finally, this Prowler retains excellent support documents, including the window sticker, dealer prep sheet, unused keys and the hand-signed inspection card from the Conner Avenue Assembly plant, also home to Viper production.
