Few cars speak to the glitz and glamor of open-air motoring in the early 1960s quite like this 1962 Imperial Crown convertible. It’s one of just 554 produced, each of which were packed with the amenities and luxuries that distinguished and well-heeled customers could have ever wanted. It all started with a solid foundation. Underneath, the Imperial’s frame was bolstered with box-section X-members stretching from corner to corner, which ensured a plush, solid ride. From there, tons of standard items were added like power windows, six-way power seats, Electroluminescent instrument lighting and door-actuated interior lights. All interiors were fitted with premium grade top-grain leather.
Those sumptuous pieces were hand-cut, sewn and hand fitted for the ultimate in motoring craftsmanship. The top—which could be had in either white or black—utilized heat bonding on the seams. This “welding” eliminated stitching holes and provided for optimum weatherproof protection. The Imperial convertible was truly the cat’s meow with primary purring coming from a 413 CI V-8 rated at 340 HP. It was paired to Chrysler’s pushbutton TorqueFlite transmission, with selectors housed in a jet-age pod next to the steering wheel. This Triple White example was given the white glove treatment, being part of the Charlie Thomas Collection.
It sports an older repaint and simply stuns with its wide whitewall tires, full-size Imperial-script wheel covers and optional extra wheel-well and rocker-panel trim. The car was also equipped with Chrysler’s optional Auto Pilot cruise control. Besides maintaining speed, it also lets drivers know they’ve reached a pre-set speed by applying a gentle backpressure on the accelerator. The top is powered, and there’s factory air conditioning and tinted glass. It’s a one-of-a-kind Crown jewel that smacks of jet-setting through twinkling skylines—and it’s all wrapped in nothing but total comfort and sumptuous coziness.
