There is perhaps a melancholy when recalling the 1965 Chrysler 300L, which became the final model season of the letter-series 300s. However, the glory of the legendary nameplate may have found its true meaning in this example. Unlike the production versions, this car features a dealer-installed dual 4-barrel carburetor layout, as well as a factory 4-speed manual transmission (1 of 96 produced), and an odometer that reads 59,806 miles. Honored recently with both a 1st Place Award and a separate Celebrity Choice Award at the 2023 Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, this is a 300L that lives up to that 300-series “sport luxury” theme.
Under the hood is the 413/360 HP V-8 RB-series engine, complete with its inline gold-toned air cleaners, power brakes, power steering and blue engine paint. As noted, the then recently released A833 New Process 4-speed is behind it, and this car came with an 8 ¾ Sure Grip rear differential. The ample body size makes good use of the heavy-duty suspension. Showing mild patina, this well-preserved car retains most of its original code BBI Black paint and is matched by its original code P4R Red interior.
This is Hot Rod territory, with wide bucket seats divided by the console housing the floor shifter, factory tachometer, AM/FM radio with rear speaker and dual rear fender antennas, chrome pedal trim, and exclusive one-year 300L console emblem. There is a power trunk release, tinted glass on all windows and even retractable seat belts. Outside are re-chromed front and rear bumpers and a set of newer chrome five-spoke road wheels wearing Redline tires. The story is that this car was special-ordered from Kunkles Chrysler in Belmont, Pennsylvania.
It was treasured from day one and retains as provenance the original window sticker, factory fender tag, the original build sheet, a copy of the original title and original temporary registration, and the Chrysler FM radio facts book. While the 300 nameplate eventually returned for the modern era, the ’65 300L was the finale of that first generation. In this instance, it has the equipment to back up the legend’s reputation.
