As you likely know, the letter-series Chrysler 300s were considered premium cars from day one. All featured twin carburetors until 1964, and all came with so much equipment as standard that the only real options offered were color and body style. This convertible 300G, which was the letter denoting 1961, was restored around a rust-free body. For 1961, this model had been restyled as Chrysler moved away from the 1950s. The angled rear fins became sharper-pointed, and the grille shape was inverted from its previous fitment to be wider at the top, with angled quad headlamps.
Available only as two-door models, these cars were enormous with a 126-inch wheelbase but an overall length of 219 inches. The 300G here has retained its original 413/375 HP cross-ram engine, with the long rams stretching across the opposing-side heads to allow sonic tuning at passing RPM speeds. The RB engine series was a mainstay of the brand for nearly two decades, and though the long-ram sonic tuning apparatus was installed for only five model seasons, it remains fascinating. The 413 is backed by a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic. Power accessories include steering, brakes, windows and a six-way seat.
The exterior is painted in rich black with a black soft top and boot and complementary tan interior. That restored upholstery is courtesy of Gary Goers. The interior further features four bucket-style seats with console-type center dividers, and it’s equipped with a restored dash with the Chrysler-developed Electro-luminescent lighting package within the instrument panel. The radio is a search tune version coupled with a power antenna, paired in the cockpit with air conditioning, tinted glass, dash-mounted shifter buttons and a factory tachometer.
The outside trim is magnificent, with Chrysler 300 and 300G identification in two formats, plus left and right outside mirrors, rear quarter side spears, and a detailed trunk with cardboard liners. This car rides on steel wheels with 300-exclusive spinner hubcaps and correct wide whitewall tires. The 300 letter series cars have long been considered classics. This 1961 example, a convertible with long-ram induction, certainly meets that exclusive standard.
