Chrysler closed out the decade of the 1950s with this 300E model, the fifth of the letter-series 300 models that had helped establish the firm’s growing market presence in the second half of the decade. A challenging model year for all manufacturers, this vehicle is one of only 140 300E convertibles manufactured that year, and it has been a multiple award-winner in the past at both AACA and Chrysler 300 club events, including the AACA Annual Grand National in 2007. As large cars with noteworthy rear styling, Chrysler promoted these classics as “lion-hearted,” so named for the new 413 CI Golden Lion engine that was introduced that model year.
The 413 was the first of the RB (raised-block) wedge engines, a design that would eventually power so many 1960s muscle cars in its 440 format. Rated at 375 HP, this powerful engine was topped with a pair of 4-barrel carburetors, a tradition for this model. It is backed by the legendary pushbutton-equipped Chrysler 3-speed automatic transmission, received the Sure Grip differential and rides on Chrysler’s Torsion-Aire suspension. Covered in rich black paint with iconic letter-series trim, the horizontally ribbed grille and razor-crisp styling cues, the true luxury of this car is found in its tan interior.
This car came with factory air conditioning, and among its optional equipment are power windows, antenna and the special six-way 40-degree power swivel seats. Other premium components are the headlight-beam charger, Auto Pilot cruise control, remote driver’s-side outside mirror and Mirror-O-Matic rearview mirror. With a matched black top and wide whitewall tires complete with specially styled 300-series wheel covers, this car exudes the sophistication that later 1950s luxury cars were noted for, coupled to performance and drivability characteristics that helped created the Chrysler 300s legacy.
With accolades from its show appearances and a wonderful overall stance, on this car, the E stands for “Extraordinary.”
